Welcome

Blogging and Posting:
At present, I’m not much of a blogger, writing one or two blogs a year on average. The upside of this is followers won’t be peppered with email notifications from me.

However, I do post on Bluesky nearly every day so feel free to join me there. I post nuggets of humor and photographs (all taken from my backyard), while keeping my political or rant-driven posts to a minimum. While I do have very strong opinions regarding politics or, more precisely, social and scientific issues which have wrongly become politicized; I simply want social media engagement to be a more restful, positive daily outlet for me. I don’t need to be wound up – aging is making me crankier as it is.

Regarding social media in general, I pulled back significantly last year, mainly for reasons of sanity and the creeping growth of AI pilfering. As mentioned, I’m primarily on Bluesky, but I’m also attempting to bridge to Mastodon where I have an account as well. Timewise, double posting is unsustainable.

Finally, on posting here, I’m toying with the idea of adding more short stories and essays with the potential to compile some of them into a book, as well as posting more of my recipes. Meh, maybe.

Writing:
I’m most comfortable writing comedies, specifically ones relying heavily on elements of fantasy, as you will find in my two books, The Devil and the Wolf and Perseus Kills His Grandfather. I’ve often stated, my goal as an author is, in some small way, to make someone’s day a bit more positive and it’s easiest for me to do that through humor. Have you ever read something which made you chuckle out loud? That’s my goal. Getting the internal laughs and smiles to break out into the real world is what I strive for.

As for genres, while I do tend to push myself beyond my boundaries, I can assure you I will never be writing in the areas of romance and horror. The former, because any attempts I’ve made at romantic / sex scenes within stories are downright hideous. The latter, because I simply don’t feel comfortable maintaining that level of intensity. As for writing in any other of the standard genres – who knows? I might like to tackle a Science Fiction tale but, you know, one of those weird ones – the kind that make average people leave the theater shouting, “WTF! I want my money back!” More likely though, I’ll write a SciFi comedy.

Interviews:
As a rule, I love interviews. I enjoy talking about my books, where my inspiration comes from, the characters, the plots, my goals, etc. It isn’t that I like talking about myself, lord knows I most certainly do, but good interviews force me to think about the craft itself – what I do and why I do it. They always give me increased focus and creativity afterwards. I guess, for me, you can call it author therapy. Maybe I should lie on a couch during my next interview.

Now I’m not sure how to label myself here. Best approximation is I’m a “consistently recurring guest” on the monthly-ish indie author video discussions conducted by Writers Supporting Writers. They invited me for one show but I never left. Let that be an object lesson for you all. The videos are hosted on YouTube by A Ruined Chapel by Moonlight.

All adding up to if you need an indie author to interview, look no further.

Current Project(s):
I’m working on an historical comedy, after a semi-failed attempt on one last year. This one is showing more promise. I can never be sure if it will pan out because I have no pressures on me outside of enjoyment when it comes to my writing.

I’m finding historical comedies difficult. While comedies do give you a Get Out of Jail Free card when it comes to facts and accuracy, I have an internal drive to be as factual and as logical as I can. I did this with both of my books. For instance, in Perseus Kills His Grandfather, I had a scene where someone was going to ride a horse. So, I estimated the potential timeframe in which the myth could have taken place, had it been real. Then, I researched if people used saddles on horses during that time period – they didn’t. You can extrapolate from this example as to how much my mind will be preoccupied with details on a work that takes place during a notable, data-rich period with recognizable historical figures. I have to rein in that obsessiveness from time to time.

I’ve also have a rather unique idea for a book which I don’t intend to write. I might write some short stories based on the premise. More interestingly, I may plan on opening up the premise I’m labeling as The Scythe of Heaven to any other authors interested in creating their take on it with my providing minimal parameters, such as a tie-in subtitle (e.g. “A Scythe of Heaven novel”). Could be very, very interesting. Stay tuned.
